Home > FAQ > Flags/Insurance Cancellations
Q. What do I do about a flag on my driver's license or an insurance cancellation notice I received?
A. You may call (225) 925-6146 and select option 1. Please have your Louisiana driver’s license number available. You may also visit your local Motor Vehicle Reinstatement Offices. We do not provide reinstatement status on-line.
NOTE: You will not be able to renew your license plate or driver’s license until the flag is cleared.
All cancellations of insurance are reported by the insurance companies to this Department. In order to clear the cancellation/flag from your record, you will need one of the following:
- New insurance information (card or copy of policy) with coverage effective on or prior to the cancellation date from a company authorized to do business in Louisiana.
- Turn in the license plate within ten days from the date of your cancellation notice.
- Provide proof the vehicle was sold, traded, junked, salvaged, totaled, repossessed, returned to lessor, or registered out of state within ten days of the cancellation date.
If the information/compliance is dated after the cancellation date, you will owe a reinstatement fee according to the schedule below.
1 - 30 days uninsured $ 50.00
31 - 90 days uninsured $125.00
91 days or more uninsured $225.00
If clearing all cancellations on the same day, there is a cap of $500.00 in Cancellation Reinstatement fees.
If you are 65 years old or older, the cap is $200.00.
The Reinstatement fee can be paid in person at any of the Motor Vehicle Reinstatement Offices or you can mail in a money order to the address below. Please include your complete name and Louisiana driver's license number on the money order. Checks are not acceptable.
